There Are No Christians in Foxholes |
| It is an old adage that there are no atheists in foxholes. The idea plays well for theists who believe that in times of extreme pressure people will put their fate in God’s hands and fence sitters and atheists will join in prayer as a means of self preservation. Atheist soldiers have protested this charge and there are websites dedicated to atheists in foxholes. The reality of war, though, is that there are no Christians in foxholes. more... |

Slowly becoming less Christian (03-24-2009) |
But "Mormons have increased in numbers enough to hold their own proportionally, at 1.4 percent of the population." That's the verdict of the latest American Religious Identification Survey, which found that "86% of American adults identified as Christians in 1990 and 76% in 2008." That's still 3 out of 4, but the trend is unmistakable. Mormon Metaphysics discussed some of the other findings: 69.5% believe in a personal God; 12.1% believe in The Force (i.e., an impersonal higher power); 4.3% said there is no way to know about God or The Force; and 2.3% said there is no God. That totals 88.2%. Not sure what the other 11.8% believe. Morehead's Musings also posted a very nice discussion of the survey results. more...

Contrary to recent media reports suggesting that the country's economic troubles have led to higher levels of church attendance, a Pew Forum analysis of polls by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press finds that while the Dow Jones Industrial Average has shed over half its value since October 2007, there has been no increase in weekly worship service attendance during the same time period. more...

Scholar Claims Dead Sea Scrolls 'Authors' Never Existed (03-16-2009) |
Biblical scholars have long argued that the Dead Sea Scrolls were the work of an ascetic and celibate Jewish community known as the Essenes, which flourished in the 1st century A.D. in the scorching desert canyons near the Dead Sea. Now a prominent Israeli scholar, Rachel Elior, disputes that the Essenes ever existed at all - a claim that has shaken the bedrock of biblical scholarship. more...

American Religious Identification Survey 2008 (03-09-2009) |
Conducted between February and November of last year, ARIS 2008 is the third in a landmark series of large, nationally representative surveys of U.S. adults in the 48 contiguous states conducted by Kosmin and Ariela Keysar. Employing the same research methodology as the 1990 and 2001 surveys, ARIS 2008 questioned 54,461 adults in either English or Spanish. With a margin of error of less than 0.5 percent, it provides the only complete portrait of how contemporary Americans identify themselves religiously, and how that self-identification has changed over the past generation. more...

Zoo chimp 'planned' stone attacks (03-09-2009) |
A male chimpanzee in a Swedish zoo planned hundreds of stone-throwing attacks on zoo visitors, according to researchers.
Keepers at Furuvik Zoo found that the chimp collected and stored stones that he would later use as missiles.
Further, the chimp learned to recognise how and when parts of his concrete enclosure could be pulled apart to fashion further projectiles. more...

Does God truly exist? A critical review (03-07-2009) |
HE author asserts dogmatically (p.40) that ”it is a fact (universally undeniable truth) that there was an eternal being without whose existence and deliberate decision the universe would have failed to come into existence.” This claim is definitely false, because there is no iota of scientific evidence that supports the actual existence of an eternal being called Yahweh or whatsoever, let alone establishes that the Jewish god is the creator of the universe. As a matter of fact, an increasing number of scientists and non-scientists, with good reasons, believe that the best scientific theory of the universe available today, that is, the Big Bang theory, is closer to the truth than traditional theological accounts of the origin of the universe. more...

Cardinal says atheist's theories "absurd" (03-03-2009) |
ROME (AP) — The Vatican sought Tuesday to show that it isn't opposed to science and evolutionary theory, hosting a conference on Charles Darwin and trying to debunk the idea that it embraces creationism or intelligent design.
Some of the world's top biologists, paleontologists and molecular geneticists joined theologians and philosophers for the five-day seminar marking the 150th anniversary of Darwin's "The Origin of Species."
Cardinal William Levada, head of the Vatican's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, said the Catholic Church doesn't stand in the way of scientific realities like evolution, saying there was a "wide spectrum of room" for belief in both the scientific basis for evolution and faith in God the creator. more...

Modern science doesn’t support theory of evolution (02-19-2009) |
I couldn’t help but notice the opinion letter published on Thursday, Feb. 12, in which the writer recognized and celebrated the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin, the 19th-century scientist. The recognition of any great scientist or thinker of the past is certainly a valid topic for such a letter and I have no problem with Darwin’s birthday being noted. However, it is disturbing that the “theory” for which Darwin is most recognized, that being the “theory of evolution,” continues to be touted as “fact” in the 21st century. more...

Christianity and Evolution -- Seeing the Problem (02-16-2009) |
This month marks the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin's birth, but the debates over science and religion have only intensified over the last two centuries. In particular, evolutionary theory poses a direct challenge to the Christian faith -- if the dominant evolutionary theory and classical biblical Christianity are to be taken at face value.
The conflict between Genesis and evolution is not merely over the "how" as opposed to the "why" of creation. Evolution presents a direct challenge to the entire story-line of the Bible. Efforts to resolve this challenge generally involve a misunderstanding of biblical Christianity, a misunderstanding of evolution, or a misunderstanding of both. more...
