So It Is Christmas, And What Have You Done..
John Lennon once asked me in a song, "So this is Christmas, and what have you done?". Each year I feel a sense of giving this time of year to those less fortunate. However, this year around, I didn't. Why? Have I turned into a cynical jackass? No, that's not the reason - And neither am I saying that I will not help others out.
But, why is it that we feel compelled to help others only around this time of year? Is it to clear our conscious that we did our "one good deed" for the year, then can go back to doing what ever it was we were doing?
It seems to be missing the point in what Christ taught, if you believe in him. Shouldn't you, as a Christian, be doing good the entire year round? Not just on a certain day to make yourself feel good and "clear your conscious"?
So it is Christmas, and what have I done John? I haven't done dick, is what I've done! Maybe after Christmas I will go out and do something helpful to someone. Or maybe I'll try to do it throughout the year rather than just one day out of the year.
Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, Happy Hannukah, and Happy Kwanzaa! (Did we leave anyone out?)
